Malibu and Valient are indie they aren't Marvel and the aren't DC.

in my mind indie means anything that's not mainstream. Malibu, Valient & even much of Dark Horse is mainstream. Star Wars can't be indie.

The term Independent came about because it meant that it wasn't under the thumb of the big two.

well I understand that.

Indie still sounds like alternative not just independent.

"Indie" usually refers to an alternative to mainstream work. Typically it's something with a small release and that doesn't usually appeal to the masses. In the comicbook world though, it typically refers to anything that's not produced by the big 2.
